Laid Off From Sales? A 14-Day Plan to Land Your Next Role

If you were laid off from a sales job, spend the first two days on money and benefits, the next three on your story and your numbers, and from day six onward reach out daily to hiring managers at companies that sell to the same buyers you already know. In sales, your network of buyers and your quota history are your fastest route back.

Deadlines that matter in the first weeks: you usually have 60 days to elect COBRA health coverage (which can last up to 18 months after a job loss), and losing job-based coverage opens a 60-day window to choose a Marketplace plan instead. Check the exact dates on your own notices.

Days 1 to 2: Protect your income and benefits

  1. Read your separation paperwork before signing. Check severance, the final paycheck, unused PTO, and any non-compete or non-solicit.
  2. Ask about commissions owed. Deals you closed before your last day may still pay out. Get the plan terms and the payout date in writing.
  3. File for unemployment in your state right away. Benefits usually start from the week you file, not the week you were laid off.
  4. Sort out health coverage. Compare COBRA with a Marketplace plan before either window closes.
  5. Save your proof. Before your access ends, note your quota attainment, rankings, and biggest deals. You will need these numbers in every conversation.

Days 3 to 5: Get your story and numbers ready

Hiring managers know layoffs are common in sales right now. What they want to know is whether you can sell. Lead with that.

  • Your layoff line, in one sentence: "My role was cut in a company-wide reduction in March. I finished the year at 112% of quota." Factual, short, then straight to results.
  • Your numbers: quota and attainment for the last two or three years, average deal size, sales cycle, and your biggest deal (company type and value). See why you might not be getting interviews if your resume is light on numbers.
  • Your target: the same role and segment you just left. A layoff is not the moment to pivot unless you have to.

Days 6 to 14: Reach hiring managers every day

Your fastest path is the companies that sell a similar product to the same buyers. You already know the market, the language and the objections, so there is no ramp story to explain.

Subject: Enterprise AE, 112% to quota, available now

Hi [First name],

I sold data security software to enterprise IT teams, the same buyers [Company] sells to, and finished last year at 112% of a $1.2M quota. My role was cut in a company-wide reduction.

I'd love to talk about your team. Open to a quick call this week?

What to avoid

  • Waiting to start. Your network is warmest right after the news. Move in week one.
  • Over-explaining the layoff. One sentence, then results.
  • Breaking a non-compete. If you have one, focus on companies it does not cover.
  • Mass applying. Hundreds of portal applications rarely beat a short list of direct emails.

FAQ

How do I explain a layoff in a sales interview?

Keep it to one factual sentence, for example that your role was cut in a company-wide reduction, then move straight to your results: quota attainment, deal sizes and wins. Hiring managers care far more about whether you can sell than why the role ended.

Should I take any sales job quickly after a layoff?

Aim for the same role and segment you just left. It is the fastest path because your experience transfers directly. Taking a step down or a different segment can make your next move harder to explain.

Am I still owed commission after being laid off?

Often yes, for deals closed before your last day, but it depends on your commission plan. Ask for the plan terms and the payout date in writing before signing your separation agreement.

How long do I have to choose health coverage after a layoff?

You usually have 60 days to elect COBRA, and losing job-based coverage opens a 60-day window to enroll in a Marketplace plan. Check the exact dates on your own notices because the deadlines are strict.

Can I contact competitors of my old employer?

Yes, as long as you respect any non-compete or non-solicit you signed. Companies selling to the same buyers are usually your fastest route back, because your experience transfers immediately.
